Preconditioning To Anoxia:

C. elegans require oxygen to survive. Insufficient oxygen (hypoxia) and complete lack of oxygen (anoxia) can lead to cell dysfunction and prolonged lack of ambient oxygen can result in death. A sub-lethal stressful insult prior to hypoxia and anoxia preconditions animals against deleterious effects of oxygen deprivation and protects against subsequent hypoxic and anoxic exposure. The genetic pathways, the molecular mechanisms driving the preconditioning response, as well as the role of nervous system in response are not fully understood.  My laboratory aims to elucidate the genetic interactions, cellular and molecular mechanisms, as well as the neural circuitry that regulates the preconditioning response to anoxia.

Neuropeptides & Anoxia:

Loss in C. elegans neuropeptide processing and secretion genes confers resistance and survival to a 48 hour anoxic stress. My laboratory is interested in understanding the cellular sites of action and molecular pathways that leads to survival to anoxia.

 Metabolism, Diet, & Anoxia:
Reports show that diet influences survival to oxygen deprivation and preconditions animals to           hypoxia and anoxia. We aim to delineate the metabolic and biochemical pathways, as well as the       overall molecular mechanisms that regulate survival to anoxia.
